Howeve r, he knows Monk's limitations as well as his stre ngths and may st ill harbo r doubts about the wisdom of allowing Monk to ca rry a gun or subdue a perp etrator. Stottlemeyer's second-in-com mand, Lieutenant Randall Disher (Jason Gray-Stanfor d), also see ms to be developing both admiration and compa ssion for th e man he once labeled "the defective detective." Des pite flaws and inadequacies all a round, th e three are becoming an increasi ngly effective team, wi th ad ditional help from Monk 's perso nal assistant. From the double- episode pilot through the first half of season three, Monk was aided by his nurse, Sharona F leming (Bi tty Sch ram). But in the tenth e pisode of the third season, Sharona w as replaced by a new assistant, Natalie Teeg er (Traylor Howard). Like Shar ona, a divorcee wi th a son named Ben jy, Natalie is a sin gle pa rent, a widow with a daughter named Ju lie (Emm y Clarke).
