《魔鬼的陷阱》是由知名导演法蘭提塞·維拉席 执导的一部劇情片,Vítezslav Vejrazka 米羅斯拉夫· 等倾情出演,该片讲述了: In the time of C ounter-Refor mation, a miller and his son come under investig ation by a priest of the I nquisition, when rumors spread t hat their p rosperity c omes from working with the Devil. The Devil39;s Trap is a film directed by Fra ntišek Vlá?il, based on a no vel by Alf réd Technik, adapted by František A. Dvorák and Miloš Kratochví l. It wa s the first of three historical dramas that V lá?il made during the Czech New Wave (technically he isn39;t real ly a part of the New W ave, however these films were made during the same era of artistic fre edom), pre ceding h is more we ll known M arke ta Lazarová (196 7) and Valle y of the Be es (196 8). Set in the late 16th Century during the Catholic Reformation, in the Moravian Ka rst, situa ted in what is now the Eastern Czech Republic, it tells the tale of a miller (Vítezs lav Vejrazka), and his son Jan (Ví t Olmer), who come under suspicion and are i nvestigat ed by a Jesuit priest of the Inquisition (Miros lav M achác hek) , when rumors of witchcraft a re sp read b y the local reg ent (Ces tmír Randa), who is jealous of th e miller& #39;s prosperity an d degre e of respect amo ng the local populace. As expected from Vlá? il, t his film is a s tunnin g exper ience all th e way through. From th e opening shot, an om inous manipu lation of perspect ive with a close up of a man gled figure of Christ dominatin g the for eground against a tiny figure in black walki ng a long the horizon, to the breathtak ing confron tational finale inside th e vast stalacti te f illed Karst caverns, it i s a wonder ful displa y of visual mast ery. Maybe not quite a s impressi ve as Marketa Lazarová , but still full o f asto nishing imagery. As seen from unique angles and distinct points of view which highlight the director39;s remark able sense of awareness of fra ming, mo tion, and positio ning o n the emotional an d dramatic tone of the scene. The most memora ble being a re peated s hot where the camera is suspe nded and launched with speed throu gh the ai r tow ards the miller9;s door. The story he re is a s imple one and I w ould say mor e acc essible than his late r works. Wi th a conven tional s truc ture emphasized as m uch by its plot an d characters, than by its exp ress ioni stic cinemat ography or authentic hi storical detail. T he events play out without much surprise, and there is a strong underlying, almost supe rnatural, mysterious aspect th at is left unresolved, in fact barely explored, which is slightly di sappointing, but only because it' s so fascinating tha t I wish there was more. Actin g is great all around. Particularly the v illains: Miroslav Macháchek as the priest, casti ng a sinis ter and i mposing shadow wherever he goes, a nd Cestmír Randa as the weasel l ike re gent behin d al l the p ersecution. While Vít Olme r brings a charis matic leading man presence in his role as the mil ler's son Jan, in love with the love ly orphan girl Martina (Karla Chadimová), who becom es a dangerous object of rivalry betw een Jan and other you ng men of the vi llage. The film also featur es th e evoca tive musi c of Zden ?k Liška (perhaps the most prol ific com pose r of th e Czech New Wave). I n this his second of eleven collaboratio ns with Vlá?il, his co mpositi ons are used spar ingly , but to great effect, complim enting but n ever overpow ering a scene. The best example of which can be heard in an amazingly shot celebration and dance se quence at the end of the second ac t. T he Devil's Trap might not be a m asterpiec e, but it is s till a strong effort, with a fascinating strai ghtforward stor y and a glorio us historical setting captured beautifully by Vlá?il 's unmis takable visual prow ess. A fi ne work tha t would also be the p erfect start er pla te to prepare y ourself for the chal lenging feas t of Marketa Lazarová or The Val ley o f the Bees. It even has a n easy t o digest running time. It39;s therefo re puzzling why th is ge m remains la rgely over looked and ignored.
