《盲目的丈夫們》是由知名导演埃裏克·馮·施特羅海姆 执导的一部愛情片,薩姆·德·格拉斯 Francelia Billin 等倾情出演,该片讲述了: Tw o diffe rences between t his Aus trian versi on and the gen erall y available American version are immediately obvious: they differ both in their leng th and in the lan guage of the intertitl es. The American version is onl y 1,883 metres lo ng - at 18 frames per second a difference of some 7 minutes to the Austr ian version with 2,045 metres. Whereas we orig inally presumed o nly a negligibl e differen ce, res ulting fro m the varying length of the i ntertitles, a direct comp arison has neverth eless shown that the Austrian versio n differs f rom the Ameri can version both in the montage and in the dura tion of indi vidual sc enes. Yet ho w could it h appen that t he later regional distribution of a canonical US silent film was lo nger than the " original ve rsion"? The prevalent American version of Blind Husbands d oes not c orrespond to the version shown at the premiere of 1919. Thi s littl e-kno wn fact was alread y published by Richard Koszarski in 1983. The film was re-released by Universal Pictures in 1924, in a v ersion that was 1,365 feet (416 metres) shorter . At 18 frames per second, this a mounts to a time difference of 20 minutes! "Title s were alte red, s nippe ts of action re move d and at least one major sce ne taken out entirely, where von S teuben and Margaret visit a small local ch apel. " ; (Koszarski) Fro m the presen t state of research we can assume that all the known American copies of the f ilm derive from this shorte ned r e-release version, a cop y of which Universal donated to the Museum of Mode rn Art in 1941. According to Kosz arski the or iginal neg ative of the film was destroyed sometime between 1956 and 1961 and has therefore been irre trievably lost. T his information cast s an interesting light on the Austrian ver sion, which can be dated to th e period between the summe r of 1921 and the winter of 1922. Further more, the copy is some 200 metres lon ger t han the US vers ion of 1924. If one follows the details given by Richa rd Koszarski and Arthur Lennig, this mean s that, a s far as both it s da te and its length are co ncern ed, the Austrian v ersion lies almost exactly in th e midd le between t he (lost) vers ion shown at the premiere and the re-release d on e.A la rge pa rt of the a dditional len gth of the fil m can be traced to cut s that were made to the 1924 versi on in almost every shot. Koszarski desc ribe s how the begin ning and the end of scenes were trimmed, in order to "spe ed up" the film. However, more ex citing wa s the dis covery that the Austri an version contains shots t hat are missing in the Amer ican one - shots/countershots, i ntertitles - and further more shows differe nces in its montag e (i.e. the placing of the individ ual shots within a sequence). All this indi cates th at Die R ache der B erge co nstitutes the oldest and most compl etely preserved material of the film.
