Howe ver, Harrin gton';s niece, Joanna, believes, ba sed on her uncle's notes, that Karswell may indeed have so me sat anic powers derived f rom an ancient tome in an obsc ure language whic h he has been able to transl ate, and attempts t o warn the s keptic Holden. K arswel l' ;s mother also attempts to warn Hol den o ff. However, the thing which begins to mos t get t o Holde n are the occasional, b ut mounting, sensory and mental disturbances he b egins exp eriencing a fter a n encounter with Karswell, and the discove ry that, during this encounter, Karswell secretly slipped a s lip of parchment with a curse in runic symbols on it into Holden 's belongings, a pa rchment identical to one H arrin gton recorded having had passed to h im in a simila r manner sh ortly before his death...
