Set in the years prior to and d uring WWII, the story ce nters on the various residents of a c o-op house. Though the directors never show the war itself, its tragic impact is felt throughout the f ilm. And despite the potential for Soviet p ropaganda, what sti cks in the mind is the universal ity o f the experiences endure d by the leading characters.
