James May  turned fifty the  previous week. Also, the rally team composed of  war amp  utees (previously men tioned in series 17, episode 6) finally completed their challeng e of finishing the 2013 Dakar Rally.　　Review: James reviews the new Bentley  Continen tal GT, and notes the  new engine and subtle ride characteri stics. Believing that  the Bentley, w ith four wheel drive system and  a big, powe  rful engine, can handle things wor se than a  Welsh countryside roa d, James takes the car onto a Welsh stage of the World  Rally Championship, with Kris  Meeke   behind th e wheel, and James being the co-driver. Since it was Hammond' ;s tu rn to select the  challenge location,  the team went to the   Western United States.  Jerem y selected the  Lexus LFA, James chose t he new  Aston Martin Vanquish, and  Richa rd took the SRT Viper. After a  brief drive in the Nevad a desert, the trio headed to Las Vegas Motor Spee dway, specifically  the dra  g strip , to comp ete in drag races organized by the  Las Veg as Police Dep  artment; wh om organized  it with the  theory that allo  wing people  to drag race, legally, at a closed circuit, w ould preve nt stre et racing. Despite the high performance of their car  s, the trio  were bea ten by modi fied production cars, and 4 WD ca   rs, in each of th eir dra g race  s.　　News: Jere my comes  up  with a s olut ion on how to solve th e crisis affecting   Britain&#39;s  town centres: sacking all traffic wardens and re moving do  uble y ellow lines. In order to do &quot;real world&quot; te sting,   Richard devised  a chal lenge to see who could burn the best elevens. T he t hree instea d ended up draw ing a phallus  and  left LA. The team then sta yed for a night  in Palm   Springs . However, the p  roducer  s gave the  m a final  challenge . The th ree w ould  drive from  Palm Springs to the Mexican border at Calexico the following mornin g, and the l ast to m ake it to  the Me xica n border  would h ave to travel into the country itse lf to drive the Mas trett a MXT,  a Mexican spo rts car mad  e fun of  by the presenters in an earlier series, for a l ater segmen t on the show. In revenge for takin g them to A merica, J eremy and  James sabotag ed Hammond&#39;s Viper , causing h im to lose 10 minutes  in th  e race. The Stig t hen completed a lap of the Test  Track in 1:31:3. 　　News: They discuss the new Su baru Impr  eza, which is not coming to UK, and they then  talk about the new Mas  erati Quat troporte.　　Chall enge, Pa rt 1: The produc ers have reserve d a single ticket  to a  football match at t he San  Siro in Mila n, Northern Italy. The trio have a r ace from Wemble y Stadium to the San Siro. Jer  emy drives the Shelby  Mustang GT5 00 and  Richard and  James travel on  public transport. Similar  to th  e previ ous ra ce to Mo nte Carlo, Richard and  James  are not allo wed t  o use any cars, and  Jeremy is  not allowed to use any trains. According to Jeremy, since the last e pic rac e, th e trains ha ve beco  me faster and b oats ha   ve become slower. Ri chard and Ja mes opened up a big  lead  whilst travelling on the  Euros tar, and arr ive  in Par  is while Jeremy  was still cross ing the En glish  Channel on a ferry.  After rea  ching Franc e, Jeremy discovers  that the Mustang  only holds 50 litres in its fuel tank. Afte r leaving Paris, Rich ard and James  discuss what to do upon arriving in M ilan — as t  here are two of them b ut onl y one ticket. Hundre  ds of miles behind , Jeremy ends part 1 of  the challenge stating  out lo ud, &q uot;I 'm gonna lose!"　　Star in a Reasonably Pri  ced Ca r: Amy Mac donald drove the Kia Cee'd ar ound t  he Test Track in 1:44.4. During o ne of  her prac tice r  uns, Amy accidentally destroye  d one of t he runway   lights, which Jeremy gives to her after revealing the lap time.　　Chal lenge , Part 2: The hi  gh speed TGV slowed down as it approached the  moun tains that surround Nor thern Ita ly. Jere my began to catch up  and was nearly nec k and neck with  the trai n, until road works  at the Mont Blanc Tunnel slow him down.  The train start s to  accelera te again an d reaches N orthern Italy ah  ead of Jeremy. Ri chard and James use a tube network to get to t he streets near th e finish line. James mai ntains his opp osit ion to run on television and Richard runs off alone to  find the finish line,  which is at a bar in the IM Villa V euve Cliequot . James then assembled a bike which he had hidden in one of his bags a nd rides to the bar  , only t o find tha t Richard is already there a nd h as w on the r  ace and the  tick et to the football  matc  h. T he Sti g did l aps of each car, the Focus being the slowest at 1:29.6, the Astra  VXR  at 1:28.3, and the Me gane in 1:27.7. Jeremy demonstr ates the complexity of modern cars' ; dshboard. Richard brings a F  iat Multi  pla and both modify it. Jeremy breaks the dash board and replaces it considering it to be t oo complicated for eld ers. Richar d ask s for th e airbags sayi  ng that it is dangerou  s for the elderly who are as d elicate a s childr en, and that he need s it fo r a safety feature.   Jeremy makes a speedometer which  reads 20 mph at the top speed, he  also uses an old design switch for  rear fog light which does nothing. Jeremy insta lls a pet-cage and replace s the back s eat wi th high se at chairs and the Fi at bad  ge w ith a Rover o ne. They pa int it in beige after ob  serving the shade of a hearing aid. Richard uses water-resistant fabric  as seat covers, and while stitching hurts his eye. They  complete th e car and end th  e part 1 with Ri chard wear ing  heavy ba ndages over his lef t eye.　　News : Volkswagen wi ll launch GTI versio  n of the new  Golf and  GT version  of Up will be launc hed. Kia will launch the Pro  Cee 'd GT. The Mini Paceman is l aunched, and the trio  mock the front end of the car, claiming that  it looks d epressing. The trio agree that the Britis h are the b est drivers. Alfa-Romeo relea ses photographs of the  Glor ia, in  which the trio make fun of it's name. Ri  chard had  arri ved la te so  Jam es and Jeremy had  attempted to play t ennis with cars (which has a lot of edi ting). 　　Review:  James reviews th e new Range  Rover in Lo  ndon . The new car is compl etely r edesigned, 400 kg li ghter  due to Aluminiu m body,  has ac tive suspension, new  gearbox, minimalist dashboard and offers better comfort. James th en races it against  TerraMax at Nevada Automotiv  e Test Centre, Nevada.  The race wa s to a hill  10 mile across, passing th rough  rocky terra in, hi lloc k, mud, river and sa nd-tra cks. Terr aMax was swi tched to dr one mode  during the race to deflate t he tyres a  nd take a short-cut.  The Range  Rover's automatic  Terrain Response System is d emonstrat ed. Jam es takes a l onge r ro ute t o ascend the hill but still wins  the race.  At the studio, the trio conside  r the d riverless cars  to be  not very p ractical.　　Star In A Reasonably Pr iced Car: James McAvoy drove the Kia C ee&# 39;d around the  Test Track with a lap of 1:43.6 despite  having le ss experie nce of drivi ng cars. He drove o ver grassy patch in the last corne r but manages to k eep th e car under  cont rol.　　Challenge, Part 2: Jer emy and Ri chard road-test their car at Christchurc  h, Dorset. The car has lar ge front  bumpers made up  of foam,  large rear-view mirrors, squeaking ball unde r the bra ke-pedal,  large magnifying-gl ass on the dashboard , sat na v (voiced by Richard Brier s) with o nly four de stinatons. The car has a n ar tificia l cat on the roof which later fell over on the way  of Bingo hall. Richard later sho ws his system to  find the location of  parked car (the car activates a flare and  then  releases a balloo n). Jeremy sho  ws that  the radio only p lays Horse of the Year Show th eme on a loop, which both later f  ind to be irre sistible to  clap along. Th e na me of the car is  revealed to be T he J  ames. They pick up three elderly ladies from a pension ers' hom e for road-testing a nd drive  them to a b  owling club where it is shown that R ichard fitte d the airbag at the rear for parking as sist which inflates the ai  rbag  on close proximity. Jeremy an d Richard bu  y food for picnic,  cho osing only British foods. They  attach the shopping  trolley to Tow hitch and head for picnic . The roo f of the car  leaks   as it rains. Jeremy and  Richard en d up  choosing  a pic nic spot on r  oadside w here they f ind the tro lley to be  damaged dur ing rever  sing  and th e food to  be soaked , however they ate the fo od wh ich was not ruined. The nex t day  both le  ave Christchurch  and Jeremy  shows  his system to preve  nt the car from being driven on the wrong side of the road, the  car init iall y so unds alarm and  later the tyres, doors and other pa rts of t he car explode  which stop s the car and rend ers it immobile. The challenge  is to find  the true source of the river N ile.　 　They set  off an  discover that exploring isn&#39;t as difficult as first thought when they go on a n ice easy d rive and fin d Lake Victoria, of whom the   Victor ian Explore rs thought w  as the source of the Nile  . Howeve r they are  then told  that  it is  not the actual source of the Nile and the re were t wo other disputed loca tions  for it, one in Rwanda and one in Bur undi. However, Jeremy Clarkson  insisted th at both of these locations were w rong and decided to head west towar  ds La  ke Edward to see  whether t here was a link betw een that lake   and Lak e Kivu in R  wanda.　　In  their journey west, where they visi t the En tebbe Airport and fr om there see the Ford Scorpio Estat e bac k-up car.  They cont  inue into  Kampala, Ug  anda' s Capital  City where they get held up in a traff ic jam over night, the most hur rendous tr affi c they9;d ever se en.　　They  continue on wel l-maintained highways west  finding their trip incredi bly easy be fore reac  hing th  e town of Mbarara in   the so uthwest of th  e country,  via a stop in Jez za, a village in Mpigi District. Here they stay in a  disgusting hotel,  after dri ving through tea plan tations in an  attempt to  discover a lovely teahouse  hotel , which in the min d of Rich ard, was bound to found due to t  ea pr ogram mes he'd see n.　　In Mbar ara they stayed in the Economic Lodge with Jeremy hav ing  a bed with faeces on  it. They  left the hot el disgus ted before Richard h  as the idea to make th e cars &#39;hot els'. James modifi es his Volvo by ad ding a library, R ichard add s a cooker and Jeremy adds a coffin. The  coffin he uses  to put h is cloth es in, he sleeps on Egyptian Cotton.　　They leav e for Lake Edward, camping overnight there becau se o f its beauty befo re h  eading  in  search of the river heading for Lake Kivu . No ne of the rivers connect the lake as they all head  east rat her th an south.  The y give up, leaving  them disappo inted. Then Jeremy looks at  a map and discovers the source of the Nile must be on the other side of Lak e Victoria.  His reaso ning is that th e Mediterranean Sea i s effectively an  inland sea and  so Gibralt  ar is the true mouth of the Nile, rather  than Alexandri  a in Egy pt.　　After discoveri   ng this they dec ide th at they must drive straigh t to the other side of Lake Victoria to get to the southeast coast in Tanzania ne ar the Ser engeti.
