As opposed to th e se ries, the documentary presents the Czech  and Slovak cin ema of the 609;s in the national , international and also inter-generati  onal context. It describes t he ways the  New Wave cr ossed the existing arti stic boundar ies, how it variegate d the world  cinema a nd where it left  an ineffacea ble im pressi on. It analy ses the  work of fil mmakers in a state  -fun  ded ci nema, under  the p ressur e of id eologi cal dem ands on one hand and c ommerce o n the ot her. It presents the dilemma of a man - an artist - on the ed ge between contradictory so cial syst ems and incongruous  aest hetic requireme nts. The existential drama  of a man acting freely and   at the same time  merciless ly crushed by the wheels of  the syste m.　　The   60's are, fr om this point of view, mostly an era of fortu nate histori  cal constellation, not only  in - at  that time - C zechoslovaki a, but on a world-wid  e scale.  An era of e xpectations and upswing, but also an er a of exem  plary human decisi ons and artist ic pu rsui t.
