Later, t  hey kidnap  a wealthy m  an in hopes  of gettin g a huge r anso   m. Things go wrong whe n the man is m urdered by Slocum then thro wn in a lake. T yler re aches his limit emotionally, and he begins drinking heavily. He meets a  lonely  woman and  confess es the cri me while drunk. The woman fl ees and goes to t he police.　　When the two ki  dnappers are a rrested, a  local j ournalist  (Richard  Carlson) writes a se ries  of hate-filled a rticles about the tw o prisone rs which even tually lead to a brutal lynching.　　T he de spair of th e lower middle-cl ass: A fam ily ma n ashamed o f bei  ng unemployed allows h imself to be conv inced by a  gangs ter to take part  in a kidnapping. Th e police arrests th em both and the ang er of the small town’s population is unforgiving. THE SO UND OF  FURY is a dark cr ime movie  that bu ilds up t o an apocalyptic storm, but never lo ses sight o f so cial re aliti es, thus telling a lot about the daily despai r of the wor king-class.
