One day an intense li  ttle m an named Steinmetz  shows up, who has the real  ability t o create objects  out of thin  air, us ing only hi s mind. As no one believes him at first,  he is held at a ward for mental patients, b ut manifests th e key to his door  and escap  es. As he has a special interest i n Dr. Holst, Steinmetz  subsequently invites Holst  to his  larg  e mansion, which  is full of expensive paintings and sculpture s, and proves to him  that he can i n fact materialise objects . Steinmetz ’s abilities  are evolving   by le aps and bounds, and is  progressing from being ab le to create objects  only to being  able  to create living thi ngs. His u ltimate ambition is to be able to c reate a human being. He tell s Dr.  Holst that if he will only perform a certa in bra in opera  tion on h im, Steinmetz wil l become abl  e to attain his   goal . He’s go t all the necessary  equipment s et up in  his baseme nt. Dr. H olst,   however,  is t oo s pooked by the whole thing t o agree to this mad scheme, and refuses.  Steinmetz then sets about manipulating Holst’s l ife, to pre ssure him into p erforming t he operation. By   then Steinmetz  has beco me able to c reate a temporary human  being, and  in the hope tha t he c an perhaps make his  own creation perform the operatio n, he manifests a d oppelgang  er of Dr. Holst. This  double proceeds to take over Dr. Holst’s l ife, creating chaos  for him pr ofessionally and personally. And t hen Dr. Holst starts fighting back.
