At M  ac' ;s urging,  Norma trie  d to reason with Paul , but he insists  that he loves Ba rbara and laughs her off . Barbara is equally disdainfu l of her and agrees to meet  Paul  for dinner  that night a t his apartment.　　 Norma's husband  Stephen Lawry is a scientist lea ving tha t night on a trip to tes  t a secret i nvention on w hich he has been working for t he governmen  t and the w ar effort. Worried about  Barb ara, she uses a pre text no  t to accompany Steph  en and goes to the  apartmen t. When Ba rbara arr ives, she finds Paul' ;s dead body and thinks  that  Norma has k illed him , even thoug  h Nor  ma insist s that he was de ad whe n she arriv  ed. Barbara threaten s to  call  the poli ce unless she l eaves Stephen.  Fearin g that a scandal w ill h urt him , Norma agrees. Norma t hen turns to Mac, who g oes to Pau l's apar tment with Friday and Marty, o nly to find the  body and the rug und er it miss ing. A man arrives to repla ce the rug and Mac hides i n a closet, overhearing a telepho ne call  to Norma&#39;s number from "Gabriel" ; to &quot;Vera.&qu ot; Mac accidentally gives h imself aw ay, but with  Friday&#39;s hel p overpower s Gabriel, who re fuses to tal k. Mac has Marty hide him to keep him  under wr aps.　　Norma retu   rns to her  country hom e unexpectedly, which discourages an  espionag e ri ng that i ncludes her  butler, Hansen, f  rom breakin g into Stephen 's safe and stealing his plans. They have killed Gerente, who was  also an a gent, and  hidden the body. M ac arrives wi th Friday at Norma  9;s hous e and prete  nds  to be h  er curm udgeonly  "Uncle Mac& quot; who  has come for a  visit. His blindness l ulls any suspicions Han sen m ight have about  him. Shortly thereafter, Barbara comes h ome from an  &quot;emerge ncy rehearsal ",  called to get her o ut of  the  house by her director, C heli Sc ott, who inv eigles an  invitation to spend the night at  the Lawry home. Un known to Bar bara and Norma, Cheli is the rin  gleader of the spie  s. Cheli ord ered P aul k  illed because his   affection  for Barbara was beginning to limi  t his effective ness, and she immediately suspects Mac i s not wha t he seems.<  br/>　　Gabri el&#39;s wife Vera, the Law rys' maid, is also a part of the  plot.  When Gabriel does not return home, Vera becomes hysterical with wor ry. Mac  secretly asks Vera to meet hi m in the greenhouse, usin g her worry about Gabriel as a  lure. Sh e is observed by the others, however, and is kill ed by Hanse n before she can rea  ch Mac. The  spies cut the house' s telephone wires so t hat Mac a nd No rma cannot call the  poli ce, and Ch  eli has Mac locked u p under guard. Using his bli  ndnes  s as a distraction, Mac overpowers his guar d and releases Friday out a window with instructions to &quo t;go ho me and get Marty.&quot; Stephen arrives home and Cheli th reatens  his fa mily if h e does not give h er the fi  nal step in creating his i nventio n, which was  not i n the safe. Barbara f inally realizes how much No rma actua lly c ares for her. Mac tries to  sta ll fo r time, but is locked in the cellar. When Hansen goes to kill him, Ma c has broken  the  light bulb and his a  dvantage of t otal darknes s helps  him overcome   the spy. Ma  rty and F riday ret urn with t he police. Wh en Friday i s spotted  by a lo okout, Mac overpowers him and is sa  ved from being shot by another lookout by    Friday. A fter the sp ies are captured, Steph en and Nor  ma are off to Was hington, D.
