Her  headstrong 17-year-old   step-daughte r Barbara, herself a promising actress, is ena  mored wit h her leading man in a small theater pr oduction, the muc h older Lothario Paul Gerente. Paul  , who had once been Nor ma's lo ver, h as con vinced Barbara that Norma actually wants Paul for herself and has only marr  ied her father St ephen for his m oney. At M ac' s urging, Norma tried to reason with Paul, bu  t he insists that he loves   Barbara and laughs her off. Barbara is equally disda inful of he r and a grees to meet Paul for d inner that night a t his apartment.　　Norm a's husband St ephen Lawry is a scie  ntist leavi ng that night on a trip to  test a secret invent ion on which  he has be en working f or the gov ernment a  nd the war effort   . Worried about Barbar  a, she u ses a pretext n ot to  accompan y Stephen and goes to the ap  artment.  When Barbara a rrives, she finds P aul's dead body and thinks that Norm a has killed him,  even thoug h Norma insists that he wa s dead when she a  rrived.   Barbara threatens to call the police unless she lea ves St ephen. Fearin g that  a scandal will hu rt him, N orma  agr  ees. Norma then turns to Mac, who goes  to Pau l's apar tment with Friday and M arty, only to  find th e body an d the ru g un der it missi ng. A man arrives to r eplace the rug and M ac hides in a clos et, overhearing a t elephone call to  Norma  9;s number from  ";Gabriel" to & quot ;Vera." Mac accidentally gi ves himself  away, but with Friday& #39;s help overpowers Gabriel, who refuse s to  talk   . Mac has Mart y hide him  to keep him under  wraps.  　　Norma returns to her c ountry home unexpectedly, which discourages an  espionage ri ng that  includes her butler, Hansen, from breaking into Steph  en' ;s safe and stealing his plan s. They have killed Gere nte, wh  o was also an agent,   and hidden the body . Mac arri ves wit h Friday at Norma's  house  and pretends to be her curmudg eonly "Uncl  e Mac" who h as come  for a   visit . His blindnes s lulls an y suspi  cions Hansen might have about hi m. Shortly  thereafter, Bar bara comes home from an  "emergency re hearsal ", called  to get  her out  of the house by her di  rector,  Chel i Scott, wh o invei gles a n invitation to spen d the nigh t at t he Lawry h ome. Un known to Barbar a and Norma,  Cheli   is the ringleader of the spies. Cheli ordered Paul killed  because his aff ection for B arbara was beginning to limit his effectivenes s, and she im  media tely suspec ts Mac is  not what he see ms.　　Gabriel's wife Vera, the Lawrys& #39; maid, is al so a   part of the plot. When Gabr iel d oes not ret urn hom e, Ver a becomes hy sterical  with worry. Mac secret ly a sks Vera to meet him in the greenhouse , usi ng her worry about Ga briel  as a lure. S he is  observed by the  others, however, and is kille d by Hansen before she can re   ach Mac. The spies cut the hous e' ;s telephone wi res so t hat Mac and Norma cannot call the p olice , and Cheli  has Mac locked up under guard. Using his bli  ndness as a di straction, Ma c overpo  wers his guard and rele ases  Friday out a windo w with instructions to " ;go home an d get   Marty." ; Steph en arriv es home a  nd Cheli t hreaten  s his fam ily if he does not give her  the final step in creating his invention, which was not in the safe. Barbara finally realizes ho w much Norma actually cares for her. Mac tries to stall for time, but is locked in the  cellar.  When  Hansen   goes to kill him , Mac  has broken the light bulb and   his advant age of total darkness  helps him overcom  e the spy. Marty and Friday return  with the p olice. Whe n Fri day is spotted by a lookout, Mac  overpowers h im a nd is   saved fr om bei ng shot by another l ookout by Friday.
